During his visit to Angeles City in the Philippine, God put it on Sylvester Cash’s heart to help mentor a local youth group called the Knights of Pythagoras. They are all Filipino and their ages range from 8-20 years of age. Some of them are bilingual and come from families that are living below the poverty level. Some of them reside in homes made from plywood and corrugated metal for roofs and other poorly designed dwellings, but to meet them you would never know it. They live in a merciless and corrupt culture, where if you are poor, the chances are you will remain poor.
This pandemic has hit them far beyond those of families in better economic conditions. By giving them the opportunity to get through High School and go to College will improve their ability to improve their economic and social status. Even in their current financial situation they are still willing to go into the community and orphanages to assist others.
The Philippine government has a “Free Secondary Education Law” which means they shall be free from the payment of tuition and other school fees but in reality, the assistance is bare minimal. Filipino, like other Asians, consider taking care of the family their first responsibility and getting their education second. Even with this program, these students have to choose between doing low-paying labor help, if they can get it, feed the family, or use the money for school. But, even in their extreme situations they still strive in their hearts, to get their education, in hopes of accomplishing their dreams and helping their families out of poverty. Some of them are straight “A” students and continue to earn many honors and awards. These young men are very talented and have aspirations that include; astronauts, doctors, pilots, lawyers, businessmen, and much, much more! Well, now they need our help in continuing their education. So, by helping these young men you will not only be helping them to continue their education and improve their economic position, you will also be helping their families. We are their last line of hope!
Sylvester’s goal is to raise $6,000 to assist them by providing necessary support to the cost associated with instruction. This cost is to include but not limited to books, supplies, laboratory fees, transportation, lodging, meals, etc.
To qualify for assistance, they will be required to maintain at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA or greater, from an accredited Philippine, U.S. or international school, to furnish official school records, and to complete a standard assistance application. These applications will be reviewed and awards/funding will be issued upon proof of acceptance and enrolment into an accredited college or trade school. Additional funds will be provided after the successful completion of each semester thereafter. Funds will be paid directly to the institution or vendors providing services, books and/or supplies, vouchers, and coupons. Cash payments will only be dispersed with the submission of original appropriate/official paid receipts. No photocopies will be accepted.
